Welcoming Jeff Magin
The Green & Gold Hall of Fame committee welcomes the announcement of Holtville High School’s new principal, Jeff Magin. We look forward to continuing our working relationship with the high school in order to improve both academic and athletic excellence; and this new leadership is a hopeful step in realizing new perspectives that can increase success for Holtville’s student-athletes. That’s not intended to be critical of the outgoing administration; but Jeff Magin was a true student-athlete who achieved excellence in both the academic and athletic fields, and experienced the kind of all-around success that we want all of our students to have. He, more than anyone else, should logically understand the connection between developing outstanding athletic skill with academic aptitude as all part of the healthier growth of a student. In Jeff’s own words he bleeds green and gold and emphasizes educating the whole child; and the Green & Gold Hall of Fame looks forward to supporting him in that venture.
With this kind of outlook there are some potential innovations that hopefully could come to Holtville High School that directly coincide with the objectives of the Green & Gold Hall of Fame organization. Academically and athletically there has long been a need to integrate more firmly the middle school with the high school so that students and athletes have a stronger district-wide program that enhances their continuous progression toward success. This not only includes the core curriculum emphasis of both schools but also the importance of student participation in athletics leading to the ultimate student-athlete. Obviously we are convinced that such an educational experience will lead to greater leadership qualities, a stronger college readiness, and real pride in being a Viking.
This means that the high school needs to increase student opportunities which the Green & Gold is willing to support; and it means that better facilities have to be put in place, and the Green & Gold can assist in that as well. It means that Holtville’s tradition of outstanding students, athletes and alumni should be made role models for current students and the Green & Gold is already doing just that. In other words we applaud the type of educational philosophy that Jeff Magin seems to bring to Holtville High School which we perceive to be an enhance emphasis in the extra-curricular activities, especially in athletics, as part of a school’s overall curriculum that intends to develop the whole student.
