The Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta is well under way in Imperial, many groups such as 4-H, FFA (Future Farmers of America) and independent individuals have made their way to have their animals compete. One competitor has pledged to donate half of her winnings to the Emmanuel Lucero Foundation.
Kathya Lopez, 16, a member of Holtville High school’s FFA competed this past Sunday at the Mid-Winter Fair, though she didn’t win any prestigious awards, she has decided to donate a portion of her earnings from the auction to the Foundation.
“Im doing this because I’ve known him for a really long time and he’s a really good friend and I think that if I can help, then I might as well,” said Lopez about Lucero.
Kathya said that Lucero was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, in 2011.
Bam Bam, her pig is a crossbred swine pig who weighs 257 pounds, Kathya hopes that he’ll bring in a good amount of profit so that she can have more to donate. “I’ve had him since November 19, and it takes a lot of time and effort to get him to where he’s at right now,” said Lopez about her pig.
“Thank you to everyone who supported me today and thank you to everyone who is going to support me next week at the auction,” said Lopez.
Lopez plans on doing the same next year but maybe with a calf.
