Viking Basketball Team Off To Strong Start
The Holtville High School varsity basketball team rolled over Borrego Springs 59-18 in non-league action last Saturday.
The Vikings made short work of the Rams, outscoring them in every quarter.
Jasmine Ponce was the lead shooter, tying the entire Rams’ offense by herself with 18 points.
Ally Rolfe also had a big game with 11 points. Estefania Paniagua came through with eight, and Amanda Angulo added six more points.
Catalina Vitela and Alexa Strahm chipped in four apiece, with Janette Ortega, Darnelle Guerrero, Angelie Gandevia and Jasmine Velasquez rounding things out with two points each.
The Vikings are 6-6, with league play yet to start. Some of those wins are against much larger schools, including a 37-27 score against the Southwest Eagles, a 28-23 victory over the Palo Verde Yellowjackets in overtime.
Holtville started off the season with a 45-9 blowout of Mt. Empire, followed by the wins over Blythe and Southwest at the Wildcat Classic Tournament in Brawley. The tournament included a loss to the host team and a 46-45 nailbiting loss to Rancho Mirage in overtime.
The Vikings followed that up with a 39-22 victory against Desert Mirage on the home court, and a 42-30 defeat of the Crawford Colts at their own tournament.
The Vikings are set to visit the Vincent Memorial Scots next Monday evening at 6 p.m. and will be hosting San Luis in the HHS gym at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 13.
