Local Man Dies In Traffic Accident
A Holtville man died in a traffic accident south of Brawley Easter Sunday shortly after leaving work.
Alex Ojeda, 47, was killed when his car was struck by another vehicle at the intersection of Keystone Road and Highway 86.
Services are pending.
The accident occurred at about 4:00 p.m. Sunday. According to the California Highway Patrol, Ulises Cortez Jr, 19, of Imperial, was driving northbound on Highway 86 in a 2013 Nissan Sentra at about 65 mph when he approached the intersection at Keystone Road.
Ojeda was driving a 1988 Mazda 323 west on Keystone Road and was also approaching the intersection at Highway 86.
According to an initial CHP investigation, Cortez Jr. allegedly failed to stop at the red traffic signal light and entered the intersection directly into the path of the Ojeda. The CHP said that Cortez’ car struck the left side of Ojeda’s car within the intersection.
After the collision, the Nissan came to rest on its wheels on the east dirt shoulder of Highway 86 north of the intersection and Ojeda’s car came to rest on its wheels blocking both lanes of the highway southbound just north of the intersection, according to the report.
Cortez Jr. didn’t report any injuries.
The CHP said the accident is still under investigation.
