Del Sol Hosts Healthy Checkout
Del Sol Market saw a good turnout for last Saturday’s Healthy Checkout Celebration. Many shoppers and their families made their way through the variety of booths set up to help with health issues and listen to music, with many staying until the end in hopes of winning one of the great raffle prizes. This included a pair of new bicycles.
Sponsored in part by the Imperial Valley Food Bank, the event included a ribbon cutting ceremony for the county’s first Healthy Checkout Lane. There was a line of customers already waiting for it to open as the ribbon fell.
A big section of Walnut Avenue was blocked off to provide room for the resource fair booths, and the parking lot was full of cars most of the day. A radio station did a live remote and played music to entertain the crowd.
“We had a really good turnout today,” said CalFresh Outreach Manager Thania Lopez.
The event is one of many that will be aimed at encouraging healthier eating by local residents.
The food bank works to provide the necessities for families and individuals having trouble making ends meet. While much of the food provided is canned or dried, it is generally healthier than what many might buy in the supermarket.
