Mall Walkers Beat The Heat With Indoor Exercise

Imperial Valley Mall was the site of a kick-off event last Saturday to encourage the community to walk for there in the mornings exercise.

The heat wave that hit us earlier this week was a great reminder that summer is just about here, and there is no doubt that it is going to be a hot one.

But that doesn’t mean that avid walkers have to give up their morning exercise. The Imperial Valley Mall opens at 7 a.m. every day and offers a free air conditioned environment for residents to burn calories.

El Centro Regional Medical Center held a kick-off event last Saturday morning to celebrate International World Asthma Day and hosted a health walk to encourage the community to take steps towards better health.

While the event intended to draw attention to the problem of asthma and the need for exercise, the Mall Walkers Program is actually available year-round. The Imperial Valley Mall opens early every morning for those hoping to get out of the heat and humidity in the summer, the cold in the winter, and the wind the rest of the year.
While none of the stores or kiosks are open at that early hour, it’s a great opportunity to window shop.

There were a few dozen walkers on hand for last Saturday’s event. Everyone received t-shirts from ECRMC staffers, as well as medals, snacks, water and free mini health screenings.

It may not seem like it to the average shopper but the interior portion of the mall is actually very large. A complete lap around the inside is one and one-eighth miles.

While nearby ditch banks may offer country air and a nice view, the time is rapidly approaching when even early mornings will be unpleasant. It may not be as hot, but the humidity usually increases during the night.

The mall is open to walkers until closing time, but being there early means that there won’t be any crowds to deal with and you won’t miss any of the markers. There are metal plaques every 660 feet, or one-eighth of a mile, so those working out can keep track of their progress.
