Holtville High School Holds FFA Banquet

On Wednesday May 24th, Holtville FFA held its End of the Year Banquet. The event was a night to recognize the accomplishments of the 2017 Holtville chapter of the FFA.
The dinner was held at “Casa Blanca”, the home of Alan and Mary Bornt east of town.
There was a silent auction with donated items from local businesses and community members to raise funds for Holtville FFA. The night began with the invocation, later a delicious meal was provided by FFA parent and community volunteers. While dinner was being served, a slideshow presenting a Year in Review of the 2017 FFA played on a projection screen for the enjoyment of all in attendance.

The awards presentation began as dinner formally ended. Awards presented include Proficiency Awards, Public Speaking, Vet Science, BIG, Creed, Coops, Farm Power, Livestock, Veg Showmanship, State Degree, American Degree, Star Awards, Outstanding Members/4yr Members, Top 25 FFA Members and Honorary Members. Highlights of the evening include AJ Silva being awarded the DEKALB award.

According to www.aganytime.com, “The DEKALB Ag Accomplishment Award showcases the abilities of outstanding agriculture students. The award is presented annually to one FFA student per chapter, who exemplifies scholarship, commitment and work ethic.” The Holtville Athletic Club presented Jack Grizzle and AJ Silva each with $500 scholarships. The Holtville Athletic Club donated $8,500 to Holtville FFA through their BBQ fundraisers throughout the 2016-17 school year; as well as $57,000 total to athletics and extracurricular activities at Holtville High School. Holtville High School Principal Mario Garcia was awarded FFA Honorary Membership and presented with a plaque.

2017 FFA awards were on display for the outstanding achievements the students accomplished during this school year.

The night ended with the installation of newly elected officers. The 2017 Holtville FFA officers: President Jack Grizzle, Vice President Sarah Grizzle, Secretary Caitlyn Childers, Treasurer David Lopez Larios, Sentinel Vanessa Sussex and Historian Jennifer Schwer stepped down from their posts to make way for the 2018 Holtville FFA officers, who are President Sarah Grizzle, Vice President David Lopez Larios, Secretary Caitlyn Childers, Treasurer Keely Poloni, Reporter Vanessa Sussex, Sentinel Sydney Mange, Historian Tori Wysocki, Poultry Mendez.Coop Chair Francisco Hurtado, Plant Coop Chair Jordan Jones and Fish Coop Chair Ricardo Mendez.

Students were hosted by local Holtville residents Alan and Mary Bornt at their home, the “Casa Blanca.”
