Football is a lot more fun when you’re winning, and the Holtville Vikings definitely had fun in last Friday night’s varsity matchup with the Antelope Rams. Holtville won 40-0.
The Rams were hampered by the high winds that blew in from the west, including losing yards on a punt that blew back behind the kicker early in the first quarter to set up the Vikings’ second touchdown by Andy Pascual.
It was a fun game that also saw some of the hardest hitting
and best play of the season so far.
Noah Jongeward faked a handoff in the second quarter and ran it in for six. Jacob Leyba put the Vikings up 27-0 at the half with a 25-yard touchdown.
Leyba finished the night with more than 220 yards.
Friday was Senior Night and Coach Jason Turner gave all the seniors the opportunity to carry the ball in the second half, with most surprising their teammates by how hard they pushed and the yards they gained.
Jace Heraz ran for a touchdown in the third, followed by a big breakthrough from Leyba for a 70-yard score.
The Vikings will be hosting the Scots from Vincent Memorial this Friday in both junior varsity and varsity games. The Scots are having a good year, being 6-2 overall and 1-0 in league. This includes a big win over their cross-town rivals, the Calexico High School Bulldogs, earlier this season.
