After another come-from behind victory where it defeated the Calipatria Hornets and brought back the axe, the Holtville Viking varsity football team had its season end not on the field but in a meeting.
The Vikings beat the Hornets 27-20 last Thursday night and finished the season with a 2-1 Manzanita League record (6-4 overall) but will be missing the CIF playoffs because of the way teams were seeded.
The Axe Game has become one of the big games of the football season in the Imperial Valley, and Holtville won it this year. The custom-made axe is a trophy that both schools fight hard to win and display for the next year.
Jacob Leyba had another big game for the Vikings, amassing 132 yards on 29 carries and scoring two touchdowns and a two point conversion. Andy Pascual scored one TD and added 55 yards on 14 carries, with 19 more on a pass reception.
David Hernandez also had a touchdown and Edwin Partida kicked a successful point-after to round out the Holtville scoring effort.
