There will be a second big event taking place in town this weekend as the 55th Annual Holtville Rotary Club Invitational Wrestling Tournament gets underway in the Holtville High School gymnasium Friday afternoon. More than 30 teams with nearly 400 wrestlers are expected to attend. Weigh-ins take place as the teams arrive on Friday morning, with the first rounds of competition expected to get underway at 1 p.m. Wrestlers take to the mats again at 10 a.m. Saturday morning, with the finals expected to begin at 5 p.m.
The HHS gym is always packed to the rafters with people but the event is open to the public for those who might want to watch some soon to be state champions on their way up. The local tournament is one of the longest running in California, and is recalled by many generations of Holtvillites because of their families having hosted out-of-town wrestlers on Friday night with a place to stay.
